AMD’s Threadripper 3990x is still – sadly – the cheapest 64-core CPU you can buy
With the new ZEN 3 processor, it is expected to be launched before the end of 2021, Ryzen Threadripper AMD 3990X, the company’s 64-core processor (128-thread), has received a non-preferred collision price that pushes the price back to almost the original retail suggested. Price of $ 3,999.
Not bad for a product launched on February 2020. Newegg sells it – with a two-time limit per customer – for $ 3949.99, much lower than the shocking microcenter price tag for the same product.
AMD can impose the price of astronomy because (a) can (b) the demand is booming while the supply remains very tight (c) Intel has not yet pursued (D) Threadripper Pro 3995Wx even more expensive with a premium of 50%.
It assumes, of course, you can take advantage of a serious multi-core performance on the offer with this core animal. The average consumer cannot require this power level, unless they become content making, 3D modeling or video editing.
3990x is based on the EPYC 7702P AMD server processor (used in data center) and supports ECC memory and PCIE 4.0. The onboard cache (256MB) and TDP (280W) means it requires strong cooling to get 64 core humming.
Note that while it can increase to 4.3GHz, the basic hour speed is only 2.9GHz. It can also support up to four DDR4 channels (compared to eight for EPYC 7702P).
