The Association of Video Electronics Standards (VESA) has just announced a new standard for self-emissive screens, such as OLED and Micro LED, which requires greater maximum brightness to win than previous standards.

The new standard is called DisplayHDR 600 TRUE BLACK and is an evolution of the true Black Standards VESA stretched on OLED screens a few years ago.

To obtain the badge, the screen must be able to reach a maximum brightness of 600 nits while preserving your black 0,0005-nits black luminance levels. Previously, VESA created the DisplaysHDR 400 True Black and Spayshdr 500 True Black Standards that each required a maximum brightness of 400 and 500 nits, respectively. In addition, the addition of this year increases the bar in the highest tick.

From now on, Asus is the first and only manufacturer offered by products that meet these requirements with its new Vivobook Pro 14, ViveBook Pro 14x and ViveBook 15 portable. These are, of course, laptops and non-monitors, but we hope that they reach them somewhere on the road when the OLED manufacturing increases abroad.

OLED VS LED-LCD Screens: What should you buy?

Ultimately, the answer to whether you should exchange an OLED laptop depends on what you want to do with it. If you plan to use your laptop as your main film observation device, then, yes, opt for a more expensive OLED screen makes sense. If you are a player and want silky soft update rates, you should probably go to a 144Hz LED LCD screen that facilitates faster frame rates.

There is also the question of price and availability. Not all laptops offer an OLED screen, although many of the most popular models such as HP Spectter X360, Dell XPS 13 and Razer Blade 15, and those who do come with a slightly higher price point than their LED screen counterparts -LCD.

Last but not least, you should consider the visualization environment and its optimal level of brightness. If you need something brighter to deal with an open window in your office, then an LCD LCD screen that accumulates APLAYSHDR 1000 certified will make more sense than a Black True AplaysHDR 500 laptop. If you have a little more control over lighting on the Room and you can really appreciate the black levels, then the needle moves towards OLED.
