When Rick and Morty told us to take a break and return for a quarter of an hour, I did not know what to expect. It turns out that the show only meant that he would be held his last two episodes of the return season, instead of giving us a longer delivery. It’s fine, however, because both ‘forgetting Sarick Mortshall’ and ‘Rickmurai Jack’ are two of the best episodes of the season, with the final episode that gives closure of the fans to one of the biggest arches of the show.

The strong episodes of Rick and Morty generally land during the final episodes of a season. There are no side stories that distract, without fluff, and unless they play an important role, the other characters take a large back seat on the plot. The same can be said about the closing episodes of season 5. It is just Rick and Morty and a great confrontation, one that is usually caused by something from Rick’s past. It is the perfect balance of comedy and the narrative that keeps it stuck to the episode.

Two birds, one mort.

Interestingly, ‘forgetting Sarick Mortshall’ feels like a seasonal end, while ‘Rickmurai Jack’ feels more like the beginning of a new season. I can not say if this is intentional or not, but that’s how the episode came out. Let’s start with ‘forgetting Sarick Mortshall’, an episode that breaks the band.

There is something unique in this episode. Yes, we have seen Rick and Morty, we go separately before or have their own adventures, but this feels different.

Morty decides to have some with the Rick Portal pistol without permission and … Who could blame him? He is 14 years old and his grandfather is the smartest man in the world with a garage full of fresh space shit. This is probably the most normal thing that Morty has done in the whole series. Unfortunately, when he tries to cover up the ‘Joy Ride’ of him with the portal pistol, he ends up creating a portal in his hand … what happens to connect to a certain random thigh.

In True Fashion Rick, when he discovers that Morty has been playing with his portal pistol, he decides to show Morty that he can be replaced by anyone. In this case, anyone means two highly trained crows.

Meanwhile, Morty decides to hang out with the new portal of him bro, who met Rick at a bar once and happens to be trapped inside a demented asylum. Both Rick and Morty’s attempt to show that they do not need the other to have incredible adventures, which produces variable results.

This episode highlights two things about our main characters. The first is that Rick is terrible. Terrible in the sense that he is petty and fast to write some ridiculous pranks only to demonstrate a point. We all remember the Morty trauma of ‘The VAT of the Acid Episode’. Here, we have another example that Rick is a flip just to show that he is useless and easily replaceable Morty. Rick’s lonely adventure takes away the rails quickly, while he ends up joining the crows in an unexpected way until he accidentally begins an invasion of crow that he has to fix.

The second thing highlighted by this episode is that Morty has problems carving his own identity without Rick. The adventure of Morty, which is the most pleasant of the two stories to see, is quickly scaled from a cathartic experience to unnecessary violence.

It turns out that there is a reason why Rick threw to Morty’s New Bud to the Bordilla: he is hungry for power and dangerous. The portal children are short-lived, and despite what the show says, that’s a great name. It is not long before Morty will come crawling towards Rick, just for Rick left Morty at the end of the episode. It is a fun episode with some good jokes and an interesting development of characters.
