Smart Concept #1 previews an all-electric crossover the US can’t have
Smart may have left the US market but just started with EVS, uncovering Smart Concept # 1 at IAA 2021 this week. Crossover All-Electric Four Doors, Strong-handsome EV previews the first production model of the car maker in a new zero-emission range.
Smart, of course, is no stranger to EVS. It offers Fortwo Electric – Ultra-car cars – for several years in the US, although the range as the exterior dimension of vehicles limits its overall appeal. When smartly made a decision in 2019 to leave the North American market, it seems like it’s not like a terrible idea.
However, the following year, the owner of Smart Daimler had a surprise. Smart will launch the new EVS line, it was revealed in December 2020, as part of a joint venture with Behemoth Auto China Geely. The first example of collaboration will be a new SUV, four doors that are all electrical.
Fast forward to today, and we get the right glimpse of what will look like that car. Described as “close production,” Smart concept # 1 is quite clearly recognized as from smart brands, but adds a modern touch such as LED lights strips and two different color color schemes. Short overhang pushes the wheel to angle, helps maximize stability and interior space.
There is a panoramic glass roof, surrounded by a light ring, and a frameless door. 21-inch wheels friendly concept in the dimensions of their greatness; The possibility of the production model will use something more conservative. Hidden door handles open the back door of the portal, hinged behind to enter and come out easier.
This helps make a broad cabin that is unexpected even more functional. Smart concept # 1 only 14 feet, with a 9 foot wheelbase, but the car maker promises more interior space than you expect from it. In the concept there was a seat for four – although Smart said the production model would have a three-seat bench behind, and sit five in total – leaving plenty of space for storage space, such as under floating center console.
The 12.8-inch touch screen is the cantilever out of the dashboard, with a completely new interface for the car. It navigates through what smartly explains as a 3D globe, with AI to suggest the driver’s most likely requested feature. Smartphone-as-key updates and OTA are supported. Whereas for Tech Safety, there will be a help steering, emergency assistant, parking assistance, and highway assistance.
What is smart hasn’t talked about DriveTrain below. We know it will depend on the Geely sea platform (architecture of sustainable experience) but, beyond it, complete details must wait for the production version. It is expected to hit the road – although not in the US, unfortunately – around 2022.
